IPL 2022 | Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders

The Kolkata Knight Riders on Wednesday named Indian batsman Shreyas Iyer as the new captain for the upcoming Indian Premier League, buying him for ₹ 12.25 crore in a recently concluded mega auction.

Iyer, who captained the Delhi Capitals' only IPL final in 2020, was released after the 2021 season, and it is an open secret that KKR needs a new captain to replace Eoin Morgan.

"He (Iyer) has impressed everyone at the highest level as a quality batsman and we hope he will excel as the captain of the KKR team," KKR CEO Vengi Mysore said in a statement.

I look forward to fulfilling that role, ”Iyer said.

"I am very proud to have had the opportunity to lead such a valuable team like KKR. The IPL brings together the best players from different countries and cultures as a competition and I look forward to leading these excellent talented individuals," Iyer said.

"I would like to thank the owners, management, and support staff of KKR for allowing me to lead this team, and I hope we will find the right coordination to achieve the team's goals." Head coach Brendan McCullum says Iyer is delighted to be on the team.

"I am very happy that Shreyas Iyer, one of India's brightest future leaders, is in power in KKR.

"I have admired Shreyas' game and his captaincy skills from afar and now look forward to working closely with him to continue the success and style of play we want at KKR," McCullum said.
